Haitō (背刀)

Introduction

Haitō (背刀) is a striking surface where contact occurs with the inner edge of the hand at the base of the thumb.

The hand is kept open, and the striking surface is formed by the thumb side. Haitō is used in strikes (uchi, 打ち).

Definition

Haitō (背刀)
A striking surface where contact occurs with the inner edge of the hand at the base of the thumb.

Terminology

Japanese: 背刀
Romaji: haitō
English: inner hand edge

Structure / Form

Basic position

  • the hand is open
  • the fingers are extended straight out
  • the hand is kept flat

Thumb

  • the thumb is bent inward under the hand
  • the thumb is kept in close contact with the palm

Position

  • the inner edge of the hand forms the striking surface
  • the thumb side is directed toward the target

Wrist

  • the wrist is kept straight
  • the hand and forearm are kept in line

Striking surface

Primary contact

  • the inner edge of the hand at the base of the thumb

Secondary contact (should be avoided)

  • thumb
  • fingers
  • palm

Basic principles

Structure

The hand is kept open, flat, and held together so that the inner edge becomes stable as a striking surface.

Body connection

Power is transferred through the body to the striking surface.

English:
ground → leg → hip → torso → shoulder → arm → striking surface

Japanese / romaji:
jimen (地面) → ashi (足) → koshi (腰) → dōtai (胴体) → kata (肩) → ude (腕) → datotsu-bu (打突部)

Kime (決め)

Power is concentrated at the moment of impact.

Execution

Movement

  • the technique starts without unnecessary tension
  • the movement is driven by the coordination of the body
  • the hand follows a directed path toward the target

Impact

  • contact occurs with the inner edge of the hand at the base of the thumb
  • the technique can be used both with the palm facing upward and with the palm facing downward

Retraction

  • the other hand is pulled back in hikite (引き手)
  • the working arm is pulled back directly after impact

Use

Haitō is used, among other things, in strikes to the head area.

Example:

  • haitō uchi (背刀打ち)

Training

Haitō is trained through:

  • kihon
  • repetitions
  • controlled striking training

Focus:

  • correct striking surface
  • correct thumb position
  • flat hand form
  • straight wrist

Common errors

Incorrect thumb position

  • the thumb becomes exposed
  • the hand form breaks
  • the risk of injury increases

Incorrect striking surface

  • contact occurs with the thumb, fingers, or palm
  • the impact becomes unstable

Bent wrist

  • breaks the alignment
  • weakens the impact

Loose hand form

  • the hand is not kept flat
  • the striking surface becomes unclear

Summary

Haitō (背刀) is a striking surface where contact occurs with the inner edge of the hand at the base of the thumb.

It is defined by:

  • open and flat hand
  • the thumb bent inward under the hand
  • the thumb in contact with the palm
  • impact with the inner edge on the thumb side
  • straight wrist
